Even though Ravindra Jadeja might prove to be undroppable at the Asia Cup 2022, former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar still believes that the veteran all-rounder is surrounded by competition in the Indian squad ahead of the forthcoming edition of the ICC World T20 2022. After a disastrous campaign in the 2021 edition of the ICC World T20, Team India will hope for an improved show at the showpiece event hosted by defending champions Australia.
Jadeja is among the top four spinners named in India’s squad for the Asia Cup 2022. The star spinner and middle-order batter is expected to retain his place in the Indian squad for the T20 World Cup. Despite missing three T20Is against hosts West Indies, Jadeja has retained his place in the Indian squad for the Asia Cup. While Jadeja was picked by the Indian selectors, all-rounder Axar Patel has failed to make the cut for the Asia Cup.

Speaking to Sports 18 after India’s squad announcement, former Indian cricketer Manjrekar was asked to share his views about Jadeja’s place in the Indian squad for the T20I World Cup. “Ravindra Jadeja himself knows there is some serious competition coming in. So it’s really about Jadeja now convincing the selectors whether he is going to be a bowling all-rounder or a batting all-rounder,” Manjrekar said.

The former Indian cricketer and full-time cricket pundit feels that Jadeja will have to convince the team management that he is a better spin bowling option than Axar. “Depending on that, his place in the team will be decided. If he is competing as a bowling all-rounder, he has got to convince the team management that he is better than Axar Patel as a second spinning option,” Manjrekar explained.

The former Indian batter asserted that Jadeja will also have to act as an ‘adequate replacement’ for Dinesh Karthik and Hardik Pandya if the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) star wants to play the role of a batting all-rounder. “If he is going to be a batting all-rounder, then has got to show that he is an adequate replacement to somebody like a Dinesh Karthik, who is likely to bat at No. 6 or No. 7, or somebody like a Hardik Pandya at No. 6,” he added.
